| | The 73rd New York Regiment, also known as the 2nd Fire Zouaves or the Fourth Excelsior Regiment, consisted almost fully of New York City's volunteer firefighters. Under the command of Major Michael W. Burns, the 73rd was positioned at the Peach Orchard on July 2, 1863 where they unsuccessfully collided with a brigade from Mississippi commanded by Brigadier General William Barksdale. The monument was dedicated on September 4, 1897. |
